When You’re Disappointed By God

Missing Peace

Review this week’s message.

Key Scriptures

...“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
Luke 2:10-14 NLT

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:18-21 NIV

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
Proverbs 19:21 NIV

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.
  • Think back to this time last year. What did you think 2020 was going to be like?
  • Were you ever disappointed by a Christmas gift when you were a kid? What was the gift?
Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.
  • What’s your first response when you find yourself disappointed with God?
  • You don’t have to understand God’s plan to trust that He has a purpose. Is that kind of trust easy or difficult for you? What steps could you take to put more trust in God?
  • Your disappointment with God might actually be a divine appointment from God. Have you ever experienced this in your own life? What happened?
Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.
  • Are you currently dealing with disappointment? Talk about it with your group.
  • How can you trust that God has a purpose for your life, even in the middle of a disappointment?
Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

Father, thank You for all that You’ve done for us. Thank You for sending Your Son to take the punishment we deserve because of Your great love for us. Help us to remember this love during times of disappointment, trusting that You have a plan for our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.
