Words to Live By

Think back to Craig’s message. What sticks out?

Key Scripture

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.  So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
Romans 8:5-6 NLT

Key Point

  • Our lives move in the direction of our strongest thoughts.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Romans 12:2 NLT

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV

… We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • What’s your most memorable New Year’s resolution?
  • What’s something life-giving you do every day? What’s so great about it?

Start thinking. Ask a thoughtful question.

  • Read Romans 12:2. How do you think God changes the way we think?
  • Craig said, “So much of life isn’t about what happens to you but how you think about what happens to you.” What do you think he’s getting at?

Start sharing. Choose questions that create openness.

  • Is there anything you currently say to yourself or to God every morning? How does that impact you?
  • What negative thoughts derail or dominate your thinking? What do they lead you to do?
  • Craig said, “Your lives move in the direction of your strongest thoughts.” How do you feel about the direction your thoughts are taking you?
  • What spiritual truth(s) will help you overcome and destroy your negative thinking? How can you build these truths into your life?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

Heavenly Father, we have all kinds of thoughts that we need to take captive. We need Your help to renew our minds. Will You give us the discipline to find and regularly declare Your truths for our lives? Amen.

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.
