Overcoming the Epidemic of Apathy

Review this week's message.

Key Scripture

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Luke 10:31-32 NIV

Key Points

Why don’t we care?

  • The volume of information is overwhelming.
  • We feel helpless to make a change.
  • We are blessed and cursed with comfort.

How do we overcome apathy?

  • Consistently expose yourself to something that creates a righteous discomfort.

With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them.
Romans 9:1-2 NLT

How do we channel our passion?

  • Focus on something.
Rather than making a little difference in many places, make a big difference in a few.

  • Embrace what hurts.
It’s easier to hurt with a purpose than to exist without one.

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • What’s something meaningless you really care about?
  • If apathetic is a 1 and enthusiastic is a 10, where do you rate on the scale when it comes to helping others?

Start thinking. Ask a thoughtful question.

  • What keeps you from caring more about the problems and pain of others?
  • Read Luke 10:25-37. What points do you think Jesus is making by telling this story?

Start sharing. Choose questions that create openness.

  • Share about a time when you were directly involved in making life better for someone else or for a group of people. What was different?
  • Pastor Craig talked about “righteous discomfort.” What makes you righteously uncomfortable?
  • Imagine you only have 30 seconds to pick one issue to focus your passion on. What would it be, and what would you do first? What’s keeping you from trying?
  • Are there any ways our group’s passions overlap? How can we partner together?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

Jesus, You came to set the captives free, to seek and save the lost, to defeat death and give life. Ignite our passion to join You in Your mission. God, help us discover purpose in our righteous discomfort. Holy Spirit, give us the strength and passion to live an others-first life. Amen!

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.
